Clayton Ross Hughes was born October 20, 1933, in Collins, Missouri to Merle and Myrtle (Wingfield) Hughes. He passed away June 28, 2024, in Humansville, Missouri.
Clayton grew up in the Collins area all his life and graduated from Collins school in 1952. After he graduated from school, Clayton joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1962. He worked as a ranch hand in Kit Carson, Colorado for the Collins Ranch after leaving the military. He then moved back to Collins, Missouri and owned and operated his farm.
Clayton married Carolyn J. Shoemaker on December 7, 1968, and he also gained a son Danny Shoemaker. They operated their farm in Collins together until the passing of Carolyn in 2008. After retiring from taking care of the farm, you could find him fishing and occasionally hunting. He worked hard his whole life and that includes taking care of his garden and riding horses. You could often find him helping friends farm, getting in a tractor was one of his favorite past times. He loved to travel and adventure.
Clayton was saved by his Lord and savior on November 22, 1960, at Brush Creek Missionary Baptist Church at the altar bench during a revival and was baptized soon after. He continued to be a member of that church until his passing.
Clayton was preceded in death by his parents Merle and Myrtle Hughes, a baby brother, his brother-in-law Kenneth Hays, brother-in-law Jim Bailey, sister-in-law Shirley Bailey, and wife of 39 years Carloyn.
He is survived by his son Danny Shoemaker (Cindy) of Collins, MO, granddaughters Amber and Laura, great grandchildren Deacon and Kady, sister Thelma Hays, brother-in-law Delbert McCracken, sister-in-law Linda McCracken, many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Compassus Hospice or Freeman-Holsapple Cemetery in care of the Sheldon-Goodrich Funeral Home. A big thank you to Compassus Hospice and Big Spring Care Center for their loving care.
