David Leroy Sommer, 82, Osceola, Missouri, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025.
He was born on October 2, 1943, to Paul and Vivian Sommer, in Eskridge, Kansas
David spent his early years on the family dairy farm, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the land. His childhood was filled with joy, helping with chores and spending countless days in the fields.
He dedicated over 60 years of his life to operating heavy equipment for several major construction companies. His skilled hands helped build miles of highways, including significant work on the Oklahoma Turnpike. As a respected Foreman, he led numerous projects and was known for his expertise and reliability. He also owned several dozers and loaders, earning a reputation as the go-to man for digging basements and ponds.
An avid outdoorsman, David found his greatest joy in hunting pheasant and quail, and especially in catfishing along the riverbanks. He spent many peaceful hours in nature, always in pursuit of the next big catch. His love for animals extended beyond the hunt—he cherished their companionship throughout his life.
David was preceded in death by his beloved son, Sean.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, JoAnn; five children, Lisa (Steve) Ruppenthal, Renee (Jon) Murray, Gary (Lisa) Sommer, Nicki (Shane) Burrow, and Todd (Stephanie) Sommer; twelve grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren.
His legacy of hard work, love for the outdoors, and deep devotion to family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
