Charles “Charlie” Dean Barnes, 83, Harrisonville, MO, died Monday, August 6, 2018 at his home. A visitation will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, August 10 at the Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville. Visitation 11:00-12:00, Funeral 12:00, Saturday, August 11, at the Sheldon Goodrich Funeral Home in Osceola, MO. Burial in Benton Green Cemetery, Roscoe, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Charlie was born October 3, 1934 in Osceola, MO, the son of Charles Marion and Ellen Marie (Rodabaugh) Barnes. He was a 1952 graduate of Osceola High School, and was involved in FFA while attending high school. Charlie was a former member of the U. S. Army Reserves.
Charlie and Mary Ellen were married July 9, 1952 in Clinton, MO. The couple lived in Stillwell, KS and Belton, MO before moving to their farm in Harrisonville in 1980. In 1985, Charlie retired from the Iron Workers Local No. 10. He was a U.S. mail contractor for 59 years and member of the National Star Route Mail Contractors Association. He served on the Cass County Planning and Zoning Board for several years. Of all of his jobs, farming and cattle were Charlie’s great loves. He was a member of the Missouri Cattleman’s Association.
Charlie was a hard worker and provided well for his family. He enjoyed spending time with grandkids and great-grandkids at gatherings and holidays. He was always ready for a good meal and never turned down a bowl of homemade ice cream. He loved to turkey hunt with his long-time friend, and many a tales were told around the camp fire. Charlie had the gift of gab and made friends everywhere he went. He will be missed.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Hal Delbert Barnes, and one sister, Julia Lee Scott. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Barnes, of the home; one son, Charles “Neal” Barnes (JoAnne), Drexel, MO; two daughters, Pamela J. Wiskur (Bill), Harrisonville, MO, and Kimberly Gilliam (Curt), Nixa, MO; 7 grandchildren, Jonathan Barnes, Christopher Barnes, Elizabeth Mannino, Kennedy Gilliam, Case Gilliam, Brad Basnight, and Jeremy Basnight; and 10 great-grandchildren, Dorsey Basnight, Alex Barnes, Skyler Plumb, Raigenn Basnight, Andrew Barnes, Carl Mannino, Jack Barnes, Kaleb Barnes, Ava Basnight, and Justin Mannino.
