Peggy Joyce, daughter of Mabel Holloway and Floyd L. Gist, was born in Pittsburg, Kansas on February 2, 1936. The family moved to Roscoe in 1948 when Mabel became Superintendent of the Roscoe School and F.L. Gist Hardware came into being. Peggy attended the Roscoe Elementary and High School and graduated in the last class (1953) held at the Roscoe High School. Active in school activities, including basketball, she maintained a high grade point average. Following graduation , she began her higher education at the Warrensburg State Teachers college and subsequently taught school in a one room school (grades 1 through 8) near Roscoe; later in El Dorado Springs and in California. In August of 1954 Peggy and Noel Dee Barnett were united in marriage. To this union Mia and Tadd were born. The family lived in Springfield until Peggy’s health deteriorated and following surgery and hospitalization, Peggy lived with Mia, her husband Tom and their two sons, Joshua and Jacob. Peggy enjoyed her grandsons, working in the flower gardens, and the time she spent with Tadd and Dee. As time passed, she particularly enjoyed watching the birds and the beautiful view from Tadd’s home in the country near the prairie. Following the drastic health issue, Peggy was admitted to the Sac Osage Hospital in Osceola and departed this earth on February 15, 2012 with Tadd and Dee at her side. Peggy’s parents preceded her in death. Floyd, January 22, 1988 and Mabel, February 12, 1993. She is survived by her children, Mia, Her husband, Tom Carlew, and their sons, Joshua and Jacob; her son Tadd and his loving companion, Deeann Collins, many other relatives and friends. She will be missed.
