Harold Gilbert Scott was born September 21, 1942, at General Hospital in Clinton, Missouri. He was the sixth of seven children born to Robbie Orval and Hazel Ruth Boomershine Scott and the first of the family to be born at a hospital. The Scott family had moved from the County Line Bridge area just a year before his birth to a farm three miles west of Lowry City and would soon move into Lowry City to begin operation of the Scott Hardware Store.
Harold grew up working in the store, learning the art of a retail business and as soon as he was old enough to drive, he would deliver 200-pound propane bottles and then bulk propane as the business expanded into appliances and propane. Harold gave his heart to Jesus as a child.
Harold’s early years were spent attending the Lowry City Elementary School before following the tradition of his older siblings of attending Bible School. While his older brother, Robert was teaching at Ft. Scott Bible School he enrolled therefor his eighth-grade year. Then on to Mt. Zion Bible School for his high school and junior college years.
His older sister, Ruby and her husband, Rev Bill Mays had taken their first pastorate in the little coal mining village of Ashford, West Virginia where a young teenage girl was saved and through their influence came to Kansas City College and Bible School in Overland Park for her senior year of high school. She was a musician and a singer, and it was just natural that Harold and Philena were married just after they graduated from high school.
It was a marriage designed in Heaven, and they began their lives of singing service for the Master. After a year of overseeing the boy’s dorm at Mt Zion and completing a year of college the couple moved back to Lowry City. His parents, R.O. and Hazel, had purchased a new home place and Harold and Philena moved into the home his parents had occupied during his growing up years.
Singing in church services, camp meetings and revivals became the ministry of Harold and Philena Scott. Harold was exceptionally gifted at leading the congregation in worship and Philena had a natural talent for playing the piano by ear. They were an exceptional worship team at their home church, the Church of God (Holiness) in Lowry City and drew to themselves other musicians in quartets and trios. The Scotts traveled thousands of miles singing the praises of the Master across the United States.
As their family grew to include Stephen Harold, in 1962 and then Pamela in 1965 it was only natural that this singing family needed a place to stay as they traveled in evangelist ministry. A travel trailer was the solution. Growing up in the retail business he understood that if he bought one RV to use, he might be able to sell one also. It was the beginning of Scott’s Holiday Corral on highway 13 in Lowry City. Over the years hundreds of families purchased recreational vehicles from Harold and Philena, and their service and sales provided jobs for many people.
Harold lived a life of serving others. He was elected to the Lowry City Board of Alderman and served as Mayor of Lowry City. He was an active officer of the Missouri Recreational Vehicle Association. He taught Sunday school class for years, served on the local church board as well as on other Church of God (Holiness) denominational boards including the Publications Board, and the boards of Kansas City College and Bible School and Mt Zion Bible School. He led the singing and sang special songs until reoccurring strokes prevented him from continuing. He gave generously to the work of God.
Proceeding him in death were his parents, R.O and Hazel Scott; brothers Donovan, Robert, and Noel and one sister, Ruth McCarthy.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Philena, his children, Stephen and wife Hitomi, of Lewisville, Texas, and daughter Pamela and Husband, Reverend Kevin Fetterhoff, of Walnutport, Pennsylvania and their 3 children, Reverends Andrea Arrington (Robert), Reverends Drew (Tori), and Anthony (Larissa) and great grand-children: Lily, Josiah, Eden, and Asher. He is also survived by his sister, Ruby Rice and brother, David Scott and a host of relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to: Kansas Christian College 7401 Metcalf Ave. Overland Park, Kansas 66204.
