J.W. Jelks was born December 4, 1930 to Ruth Smith Jelks and John Ovid Jelks in Dunklin County, Missouri.

He was united in marriage to Mary Shinn January 14, 1950.  To this union five children were born, Donna, Geraldine, Ronald, Clayton and J.W. Junior.

J.W. farmed and worked for Riverview Cheese Company and also Clearfield Cheese in Clinton, Missouri.  He managed the Osceola Swimming Pool for a few years.  He continued to farm until part of the farm was bought for Truman Lake.  He was the Scoutmaster for troop 350 in Osceola, Missouri for several years.  He also worked for the city of Trenton, Missouri as an electrician and later opened a boat and motor store and ran the Osceola Marina as well.  J.W. went to work for IBEW as a lineman after closing the marina.  He drove a school bus for several years.  He went to seminary school after retiring and was an ordained pastor.  He was active in several churches in and around Osceola.

He was active in numerous activities in Osceola for many years.  He was a mentor to all the young men of his Scout Troop and helped them become the men they are today.  He liked to fish, hunt and tell stories.  He wrote some of his stories down for the family to cherish.

J.W. was preceded in death by his father, John Ovid Jelks; mother, Ruth Jelks Fields; grandparents, William Walter Smith and Edith Gardner Smith; son, Clayton Jelks and daughter, Donna Jelks Crouch and brother, Marvin Jelks.

He is survived by his children, Geraldine, Ronald, J.W. Junior and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren; sister, Wilma Jean Bell (Jerry); brothers, Bill Fields (Bonnie), Bob Fields (Sue), Ted Fields (Jean) and Jim Fields (Wanda).
