Kennon, Ruby I April 17, 1913 - November 13, 2014

Ruby Ione (DeShazo) Kennon passed away at Community Springs Health Care Facility on November 13, 2014 at the age of 101 years. She was born April 17, 1913 in St. Clair County to Frank E. and Bessie E. DeShazo. She was the second eldest of nine siblings. She was united in marriage to Palmer (Pink) Kennon on February 10, 1934 and to this union two children were born, Eleanor Marian and Larry Neil. Ruby found the Lord at a young age and was a member of Brush Creek Church, where she attended 75 years. She and Palmer traveled lots of miles over the years going to revivals and other church meetings in surrounding counties until his death in 1982. She loved her flowers and making her yard look as nice as possible. She loved to mow and pushed her mower “miles” for neighbors. In the fall, before Palmer’s death, she could be found at the corner of 54 and 13 highways at the Peden Sorghum Mill filling the buckets with sorghum and selling it to travelers. Ruby also worked several years for Nunn’s Hatchery helping with the baby chick sales in the spring. When her health began to fail, she sold her house in Collins and moved to Kansas City to be near her daughter and son and enjoyed life in her small apartment. She made many new friends while living there. Quilting was one of her greatest pleasures and she took great pride in quilting them by hand. When you went to her house, she always tried to feed you, even though she never really liked to cook! Ruby made beautiful pies and cobblers and knew where every blackberry and gooseberry patch was in the county and had as many chiggers as berries every trip. She played the piano and enjoyed singing gospel songs. She would lie in her bed and sing to herself in the nursing home when she was having a “good” day. Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Palmer; her parents, Frank and Bessie; three sisters, Sarah, Eunice (Good), and Ruth (Sims); and two infant brothers. She is survived by her son, Neil and wife, Norma Jane, of Sun City West, AZ; daughter, Eleanor and husband, Jerry Jones, of El Dorado Springs, MO; granddaughters, Judy and husband, Danny Burks, of Mt. Vernon, MO and Jean and husband, Steve Tompkins, of Quincy, MO; great grandchildren, Jacque Raymond, Steven and Reuben Tompkins, Shawn (Burks) Black and great great grandson, Jeff Raymond. Ruby is also survived by three brothers, Don DeShazo and wife, Iris, Mark DeShazo, Frank DeShazo and wife, Melba, and many nieces and nephews.
