Family suggests memorial contributions to the Evelyn June Marshall Scholarship Fund

Evelyn June (Masten) Marshall, Osceola, Missouri was born March 31, 1927, near Vista, Missouri to Arthur Reed Masten and Louisa Mae (Slagle) Masten. She passed from this life in the presence of her Lord, Jesus Christ July 13, 2022, at the age of 95.

June grew up with her parents, seven brothers, and three sisters, on farms around the Gerster and Vista, Missouri area until her family settled down on their family farm west of Osceola. She always worked hard helping with livestock, horses, and helping her mother with her siblings. She learned to cook, clean, sewing including making her own clothes. She learned to make quilts which she loved and made many beautiful quilts for her family. She found love for many things in her life, but Art was her passion. June never wasted anything, she recycled, and her family knew that she could look at something and turn it into anything from trash.

June graduated high school from Rockville School in Rockville, Missouri. She then attended Central Missouri State University and graduated with her degree in Art/ Teaching. She worked during the summers in the early 60’s and received her master’s degree in art education.

June met the love of her life William Elvin Marshall, and they were married February 2, 1945. They were blessed with 56 years together. They bought the family farm west of Osceola, not long after they were married and raised their family there.

June taught at several schools during her life. Early on, she taught at Park School, then she went to work at Washington School (Rabbit Roost), it was just about a mile south from the family farm. She taught at Rabbit Roost from about 1952-1956, it closed in 1956 and June went to Roscoe Consolidated School in Roscoe, Missouri. She was the 1st and 2nd grade teacher at Roscoe for many years. Soon after, June took a teaching position at Osceola Public Schools, teaching different grade levels and Art class. She left Osceola, and taught at El Dorado Springs R-2, where she retired. After retirement June went back to Roscoe School and was there for about 5 years. She loved teaching, all her students and her fellow teachers.

During her summer months being away from teaching, June raised a beautiful garden and lots of flowers. Her and Elvin would travel to and from Florida where Jane and her four kids lived. They took other vacations as they loved to travel and camp. A lot of summers Bills two boys, Will and John would spend all summer on the farm, as well as Janes four kids: Gina, Amy, Jill, and Casey. June and Elvin taught the grandkids everything, fishing, gardening, painting, the girls how to cook, sew, can fresh vegetables, and all kinds of craft projects. Music was another great past time for her and Elvin. The attended many house/farm dances (Elvin played the fiddle) lots, of square dances, they also enjoyed having friends over. June always welcomed friends and family to visit, share a meal and stay the night. Students from near and far always remembered her all their life. No matter where she went, she always had students greet her with a hug, and memories they had while they were in her classroom. She taught more than academics, she taught about “real life.” All her students have fond memories about “Miss June.”

June joined Kidd’s Chapel Church in 2003 and was saved and Baptized August 1, 2004.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Elvin, 7 brothers, 2 sisters, daughter: Linda Jane Marshall Courson.

June is survived by her sister Doris McNarie of Nevada, Mo, one son: Billy Joe Marshall (Jane) of Clinton, Mo. Three granddaughters: Gina (Courson) Gibb (Troy), Amy Linn (Courson) King (Chris), Jill (Courson) Brock (Joe) all of Florida, one bonus granddaughter: Shelbi Schenker, three grandsons: William Anthony Marshall (Margaret) of Bainbridge Island, WA, John Michael Marshall of Clinton, MO, Casey Charles Courson (Melinda) of Florida.
