Patty, Mary M. July 5, 1924 - April 7, 2011

Mary Margaret Patty, 86 passed away on Thursday, April 07, 2011. That morning Fred Stevens, Methodist Pastor of Osceola was with Mary. He read Psalm 139 then prayed with her and told her Jesus loves you and Mary with a normal pulse and blood pressure seemed to take a deep breath and slipped off into the arms of Jesus. Mary was born in Mayetta, KS on July 5, 1924 to Joseph Earnest and Garnet Dorothea Owen (Mize). Mary‘s childhood was spent in Kansas, California during World War II and in Missouri. She attended St. Mary’s College for Nursing in Manhattan, KS. Mary and her parents first moved to Osceola in 1936. Mary’s father worked as the caretaker of the Osceola Cemetery for .15 cents an hour and $8.00 for digging a grave all with a shovel. The family moved to the Kansas City area but Mary returned to Osceola and back to the original family property in 1989, where she resided until her death. Mary was employed for TWA in Kansas City as an industrial nurse for over 30 years. She was an active nurse for over 45 years. Mary traveled all over the world with her nursing and could fill your day with stories of her travels. Mary was paged to assist a VIP in the terminal and there sat her patient, Howard Hughes; Yul Brenner was on the same plane with her, she met one of the presidents of the US. Mary was truly blessed to travel all over the world -helping others with her nursing skills. Mary’s granddaughter is also a traveling nurse. Mary relived her nursing career thru her granddaughter Lisa’s stories. Mary and Joe Patty married in 1962; she had one son Joe Patty who blessed her with three beautiful grandchildren they were the love of her life and Mary was their “Gram”. When Mary saw you she gave you that Mary smile with the twinkle in her eye as it portrayed a surprise, a joy and a Wow! Mary was an awesome published poet her name belongs up there with all the great poets. Over the years Mary has written poems and given many away to friends along her life’s journey. As many poems as possible have been put together into a booklet titled, A collection of poems by Mary Patty. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, Lawrence “Bud” and Joseph Owen; one nephew, Mike Owen. Mary is survived by her son, Joe, three grandchildren, Lisa Susunaga and husband Iran of Nome, Alaska, Laura D’Andrea and husband Tony of Republic, MO, David Patty of Lenexa, KS, two great grandchildren Caroline and Tommy D’Andrea, her sister, Eleanor McKee (Miller) of Tonganoxie, KS the writer of “Aunt Norrie’s newspaper column, Mary was an aunt, a great aunt, great-great aunt and a great-great-great aunt making her a “Triple Great Aunt” to numerous nieces and nephews. During Mary’s sickness she never lost her humor or wit. Just four days prior to her death Mary was quoted as saying, “I hate to brag but I’m going to heaven” and that she did.
