Scarry, John Phillip March 13, 1923 - April 20, 2013

John Philip Scarry, 90 of El Dorado Springs, Missouri went home to be with Jesus on April 20, 2013 at Cedar County Memorial Hospital in El Dorado Springs, Missouri He was born on March 13, 1923 in San Francisco, California to Lorenzo (Lawrence) and Felicita Scarry (Alice Bonnici). Both his parents immigrated from Malta in the early 1900’s. John was the eldest of five children, Lawrence Calcidon, Rose Mary, Jerald Scarry of California and Phillip Scarry of California. John married Paulyne (Smith) in 1944 and they had three children; 2 daughters, June Thaut and Jan Baunack (adopted); son, John Scarry. They were married for 36 years when Paulyne passed away in 1980. He met and married Verna in 1981. Verna passed away in 1993. In 1996 John and Carole were married and moved to Missouri from Arizona where they lived until John passed away. John has 6 grandchildren, Annjanette, Tony, Sean, Paulyne, Duane and Alex. John has 9 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. John grew up in San Francisco until the age of 12 and then he and the family moved to Palo Alto. As a youth before moving to Palo Alto he would play baseball games in the streets of SanFransisco. As a young boy he helped on the farm with the cows and chickens. John attended and graduated from Palo Alto High School in California in 1940. On December 8, 1941 he joined the Navy and was sent to the Pacific during WWII. After returning from the service he attended San Mateo Junior College for Sheet Metal training. He worked in the sheet metal trade until his retirement. During that time he worked on such places as the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, California in the 1970’s. He did the mechanical drawings and then worked as the project manager. He also worked on the Bank of AMerica building in San Jose, California where he was the superintendent on the project. It was nine story building. John served 18 years on the union executive board and received his 70 years of Good Standing with his union pin and plaque in January of 2013. As a young adult he was a member of the VFW and held all of the offices. 1950 to 1951 he was commander of Post #69 which was the Allen Hammond Nicholes Post. 1955 to 1964 he did squar dancing and belonged to three different clubs. He would square dance three evenings a week. At one time he was the president of the club “Krazy Daisey’s” in Campbell, California. John’s hobbies were gardening, painting, bowling and wood work. He entered some of his paintings at the Walnut Festival in Stockton, Missouri where he won both first and second place. John was also a member of MO.#319 TOPS in El Dorado Springs. He was TOPS King in 2003. John’s biggest accomplishment was to win the Grumbacker Gold Medallion Award for the painting, “Beauty at Oak Creek” in February of 1996. In the Mountain Shadow’s Artist Association annual show, First Place in Best of Show.
