Loyd Joe Simmons was born December 11, 1934, in Ransom, Kansas to Virgil and Lillian Simmons. He passed away October 2, 2024 in Sedalia, Missouri.

Loyd grew up in Arcola Mo. and attend Arcola High School for his Freshman/Sophomore year and Greenfield High School his Junior/Senior years graduating in 1952. He was one of 10 children 5 boys and 5 girls. He married Jerene Darnell in 1954, and they had three children Darrel, Pam and Ivan.

Loyd worked construction for 17 years during the day (member of teamsters’ union) and General Motors for 33 years and 7 months at night (member of the UAW).  He was so proud that he was retired and drew his pension longer than he worked.  At General Motors he met friends that would last a lifetime.  He spoke and called them often, heck we thought they were our family, Red (Bobby Cross), Jerry Chambers, Jim and Pat Terry, Dale Church, Dale Reynolds just to name a few.

He retired and moved to Roscoe Mo in 1988 where he built his house and lived there until his death.  He loved his cows, feeding them, watching them calve in the spring/fall, cussing at them when they acted up.  He liked to drive the boat while others fished until he just couldn’t get that leg over the edge of the boat. When it came fall and deer season, he started planning a get together.  He would tell us that this was like a family reunion, “hell this is the only time we see each other” he would say.  How true that was and what a great time we all had.  He always had a soft spot for his grandchildren and great grandchildren when he seen them a smile would come over his face and arms extended to hug.  Loyd and his sister Clara were the last remaining siblings.  Clara called him often and they would road trip down to see their old stomping grounds and reminisce about childhood memories.  I couldn’t believe they could still recall them, but they did, and it was very interesting to listen.

He was just a Good Ole Boy and will be missed dearly.

Loyd was proceeded in death by Ronald Loyd (infant son), Chris Simmons (grandson),  his wife Jerene, parents Virgil and Lillian, brothers: Howard, Earl, Marvin, and Virgil Thomas.  Sisters: Dorthy, Thelma, Burnice, and Marion. As well as many in laws and friends.

He is survived by sons: Darrel Simmons (Diane) and Ivan Simmons (Holly), daughter Pam Day (Bill), grandchildren, Brian Simmons, Megan (Cody) Leake, Richard (Joy) Day, Arron (Tab)  Day, Corey (Tamara) Simmons, Collin (Megan) Simmons, and Cara (Erin) Simmons, great-grandchildren, Ethan, Tyler, Jaedyn, Connor, Carter, Cole, Ryan, Camdyn, Zoey and James, a great -great grandchild Ember, many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Loyd was so sweet. I enjoyed him so much at GSCC…from late night talks, to toenail trimming, and sharing his sister’s salmon patties; we had quite a good time. This time he wasn’t as perky, but he absolutely made my week when he remembered me! I’m glad I was there for him his last night here.

Rest in peace, my friend. Teresa Viebrock, LPN
