Shirley had fond memories of attending elementary school in Jerome, Idaho and loved sharing stories such as:
crossing a field to catch the bus for school, snow being so deep that her Dad had to carry them home, and
irrigation canals from the Snake River. Her family moved to Dederick when she was 14. During High School she
was involved in vocal music, worked on the El-Hi-Mo, (school newspaper), was a member of Student Council for 2
years, a member of the championship girls basketball team during her sophomore, junior and senior years. She
graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1947. She attended college at SMS, (MSU) obtaining a B.S. in English, Math
and Secondary Education in 1956. Shirley’s first 2 years of teaching experience was at Mobley School, a one room
school NW of Dederick. In 1951, she began teaching 7 th grade at El Dorado Springs (ElDo). By Christmas that year
she had 50 students in one room in the basement of the old high school building. At the end of the semester, the
class did get divided up. She continued teaching at ElDo until 1966 when she became responsible for organizing
the first elementary library. She retired as elementary librarian in 1985.
Since a large part of her life revolved around teaching her overall comments were: “The teachers through the
years have worked hard to educate our students. We had our problems but we were fortunate to be able to
discipline without fear of lawsuit. We could give a friendly hug or pat to show how much we cared. Parents
generally supported us. I’ve had the privilege of teaching hundreds of students at ELDo. It’s been amazing how
fast many of my “kids” became senior citizens. I have been blessed to have been a part of their lives.”
On June 27, 1952 she was united in marriage to Marvin Vickers. They made their home on a farm south of
Dederick for the next 72 years. In addition to her teaching profession she took on the duties of farm life including
milking cows, cooking dinners for harvest teams, and gardening. She always enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles
and being outside. They had two wonderful sons Clinton and Chris.
She was preceded in death by her parents Archie & Thelma (Crothers) Mullins, husband Marvin and two brothers,
Gale &Richa rd Mullins. She is survived by her sister Ruth Brown of ElDo, her sons Clinton (Lucy) Warrensburg,
MO; Chris (Vickie) ELDo, Grandchildren Michael (Mandi) Lebanon, MO; Caleb, Joplin, MO; Travis (Kasey) Fulton,
MO; Ashley (Micheal) Lebanon MO and Quade (Jenna) of Nixa MO. Great Grandchildren are Lexi (Collin),
Maverick, Cash, Duke, Brooks, Mackenzie, Stacie and Sadie. Great Great Grandchildren Orlie and Obadiah. Many
nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
