Hawes, John J. November 20, 1927 - September 9, 2018

John Julian Hawes was born November 20, 1927 to Hazel Leona (Johnson) and Cyrus Kingsberry Hawes in LaMonte, Missouri and passed peacefully in his sleep on September 9, 2018 at the Truman Lake Manor in Lowry City, Missouri.

John was a kind-hearted man who loved having his family around him, the closer, the better. He loved farming and being out of doors. He never met an animal he didn’t befriend and ultimately became a pet. He was an avid gardener who loved supplying vegetables to everyone he knew. He liked fishing but didn’t take much time to do it. Although he worked away from the farm a lot of his life his most treasured days were on the farm working from sun-up to sun-down. Once you got him away from the farm he enjoyed traveling. He and Doris spent several months in Colorado and multiple trips to Arizona, but one of his favorite vacations was a three-week trip ‘out-west’ with son Terry and son-in-law Randy to explore, fish and pan for gold.

After growing up in Thayer, Missouri, John moved with his family to the Kansas City area. He served in the Merchant Marines and the US Army. John married the love of his life, Doris Ann Gray on June 24, 1950. They owned businesses in the Kansas City area before settling in Osceola, Missouri in the early 1960s. John and Doris had two children, Diane and Terry.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife Doris; brother Roy Donald, half-siblings Marvin Hawes, Maurice Hawes and Jewel Roste and one niece, Janice Hawes.

He is survived by daughter Diane and husband Randy Miller of Bolivar; son Terry Hawes of Osceola, grandchildren Kara Miller, Lee’s Summit; Chris Hawes, Lowry City; Mike Hawes, Iconium; Heather Tye, husband Nick and great-grand daughters Madisyn and Ava of Harrisonville; Ashley Crites of Lowry City; and Jake Hawes of Lowry City; one nephew Steve Hawes and family of Kansas City and daughter-in-law Kim Hawes of Iconium; a host of extended family and friends. John was voted resident of the month twice in the year and a half he lived at Truman Lake Manor where he always had a story to tell to anyone with time to listen. He joked every day with his care givers and they with him, lovingly referring to him as Grandpa. He will be missed by his family and friends but his lasting impression will live with us forever.
