Gloria L. Maxwell, age 83, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2016 at Mercy Hospital ICU in Springfield, Missouri. She was born July 22, 1932 at the family home in Cedar County. She was the second of three children born to Herman and Violet Hertzberg.
She graduated from El Dorado Springs High School in 1950. She received her apprenticeship under Lillian Sunderwirth in Cosmetology. She worked for Lillian for many years before an early retirement due to developing rheumatoid arthritis. She loved people and loved taking care of her clients hair.
Gloria was united in marriage to Jerry N. Maxwell on
April 23, 1961 and began their life in the El Dorado Springs Community. To this union a daughter was born. She was a wonderful wife and mother. Years later, Gloria became a proud and thankful grandmother.
She attended church regularly and was always strong in her devotion to God. Gloria accepted Jesus as her personal Savior on June 22, 1949, at Old Flat Church.
Gloria was a trusted friend to everyone she met. Her bubbly personality drew people to her. She loved the small town of El Dorado Springs where she called home, where everyone knew everyone. She would offer her help at any time and expect nothing in return. This was apparent where she resided at the Community Springs Nursing Home for over four years. She loved sitting at the nurses station visiting with other patients and sometimes proclaiming “she was in charge.” She called this “Hospitality Corner.” She especially loved getting her hair done by Jared, and then stay in the beauty shop helping unwrap curler papers, or whatever else Jared would allow her to do. She enjoyed getting her nails done too.
Preceding Gloria in death was her loving husband, Jerry; her older sister, Lanelle Newman; her parents, Herman and Violet Hertzberg.
Survivors include her daughter, Pamela Bowen, and her husband, Kevin in El Dorado Springs; her eighteen year old granddaughter, Alissa Steward in El Dorado Springs; her brother, Donald Hertzberg and his wife, Josephine in El Dorado Springs; and many other relatives including nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
