Norma Jean “Jeanie” Scott Naylor was born July 28, 1947 in Warsaw, Missouri to Dewey E. and Eunice (Lawson) Scott. She departed from this world to join her Heavenly Father on August 9, 2019 after a long battle with multiple chronic illnesses. Jeanie’s strength in overcoming battle after battle is a testament to her faith and devotion to family. She will be dearly missed by all whose lives she touched.
She was delivered by Dr. Gus Salley. Dewey and Eunice were operating the Iconium store at that time. Jeanie started first grade at Liberty/Iconium Schools at the age of four. In 1954 the family moved to Osceola where Jeanie graduated from high school as the class Salutatorian in 1964. Dewey and Eunice operated Scott Sundries until 1977, at which time Dewey fully devoted himself to the real estate and appraisal business.
Jeanie attended Central Missouri State College where she obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1968. She later returned to Central Missouri State College where she obtained a Masters Degree in Education. Jeanie started her teaching career, which spanned over 30 years at Mack’s Creek and later worked in the Lakeland and Osceola School Districts. Her career in education included teaching math guidance counseling and administration. Former students reached out to Jeanie through the years to thank her for the positive impact she had on their lives
She was united in marriage to James O. Naylor, Jr. on November 25, 1971 in the parlor of the Commercial Hotel in Osceola, Missouri. Jim and Jeanie were the proud parents of three daughters; Jennifer, Jana and Jayne. Jim often recalls fondly of his early infatuation and pursuit of Jeanie’s affections. Together, Jim and Jeanie operated the Iconium Store and the Commercial Hotel and Café for many years. In 1989, they opened Clearview Daycare and Preschool in Osceola where they served many families for 21 years.
Following her retirement in 2000, Jeanie opened the Baer House Dinner House where she and good friend, Landa Erwine, along with many family and friends served countless home cooked meals. Jeanie was best known for her fried chicken and homemade pies.
Jeanie instilled in her daughters a sense of independence, the importance of religious faith, the value of family, the joy of cooking and a love for shopping. There are three things that come to mind when remembering Jeanie. She was strongly devoted to her family, always there to support and encourage. She loved to cook and shared that love unselfishly with others. Jeanie spent countless hours cooking and baking for family and friends, often opening her home for special gatherings. Jeanie had an undying devotion to education and to the children she taught. She believed strongly in the value of knowledge and discipline. She was blessed with the ability to be both a friend and an authority figure.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dewey and Eunice Scott. Jeanie is survived by her husband Jim Naylor, of the home; daughters, Jennifer and husband Jon Swope of Rogersville, Missouri, Jana and husband Scott Witt of El Dorado Springs, Missouri and Jayne Hankins of Osceola, Missouri; grandchildren, Taylor, Tanner, Tilar, Gerrit, Gregory, Emma, Lindsey and Katie; great granddaughter, Olivia; brother, Wayne Scott and wife Ginger of Iconium, Missouri along with numerous friends and family members.
