C. Robert Sanders of Austin, TX, formerly of Memphis, TN, passed peacefully into God’s hands on June 20, 2014, at The Summit at Westlake Hills, Austin, TX.
Born November 13, 1923, he was the second of three children born to William John and Iva Keeney Sanders. He held a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Rolla School of Mines, where he met and married Crystal Jones Sanders in 1947. He also held a Master’s degree in Engineering Administration from Bradley University.
He worked for the U.S. Geological Survey and McDonald-Douglas during the early years of employment. Most of his career was spent at Caterpillar Tractor, working as an engineer and plant manager in Peoria, IL, and Memphis, TN.
His love and care will be missed by all who knew him. His family will treasure the many wonderful memories and his love of travel and vacations with Chris and the family. We especially value his commitment to serve his family and the legacy he leaves for us.
He is survived by: his son, Steve Sanders (Laura) of Buckley, WA; daughters Mickey Newman (Charlie) of Nashville, TN; Kay Walbridge (Kerry) of Dallas, TX; Kathy Huffaker (Jerry) of Austin, TX; Mary Beth Felle (Ken) of Charlotte, NC; nine grandchildren-Michelle (Wayne) Klenke, Josh (Bethany) Newman, Katie (Andy) Schonert, Emily (Beau) Bristow, Lauren (Tim) McClement, Andrew Walbridge, Nathan Felle, Tory (Bobby) Leech, Robert Judd Huffaker; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and siblings.
The photo in uniform was taken in the fall of 1943, while Bob was at Ft. Hood, TX. He was shipped to the Island of Luzon, Philippines, where he joined the 11th Airborne Division as a Communications Sergeant. Following the Japanese surrender he was shipped to the island of Honshu, Japan, where he served as First Sergeant, Mess Sergeant, Supply Sergeant and Communications Sergeant.
