Lutes, Bertie Marie April 28, 1922 - June 15, 2014

Bertie Marie Lutes was born April 28, 1922, east of Roscoe, Missouri, to George David and Mary Maud Mitchell and passed away June 15, 2014, at Big Spring Care Center in Humansville, Missouri at the age of 92. She had one sister Nell Smith and five brothers, Jess, James, George, twin brother Lee and Charles.

Marie attended Benton Green and Rock Point Schools and graduated from the 8th grade in 1935 from Rocky Point. Growing up she worked for a number of families who had illness, babies or other problems which required help. She married her childhood friend and sweetheart, Ray Lutes on December 20, 1939. Ray and Marie were married 53 years prior to his death on November 9, 1993. They lived within three miles of Roscoe all these years except for one year in Kansas City and Lee’s Summit. They hosted annual trail rides for 18 years which were enjoyed by family and friends.

Marie had three children, Larry Lee, Linda Rae, and Shirley Gay and was known as Mom, Mama, Nanny, Grandma, Aunt Marie, and Nana Marie. She worked five years as an Avon Representative in the early fifties. In the sixties she worked for Waite’s Nursing Home in Osceola, later two school terms as cook at Roscoe School, and several months at Clearfield Cheese in Clinton. At one time or another she babysat grandchildren, Pam, Scott, Brian, Melissa, Nicole, Jere, Wendi, Sherri and Michael but since she lived close to Linda, she babysat Nicole, Jere, and Wendi from age 3 weeks until they started to school. Later she babysat children of two Roscoe teachers. Even though Marie was in her eighties, she agreed to care for Lolly and Tegin Sheldon until her health started to decline. All of these children were considered to be her grandchildren too.

Marie was active in the community serving was a member of the Roscoe Community Historical Society and Roscoe Sewing Circle. She loved riding Kathy’s Oats Bus, cooking, playing cards and visiting until she became a resident of Big Spring Care Center in Humansville on July 20, 2013.

Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, sister and brothers.

She is survived by her children, Larry and Donna Lutes of Nevada, Linda and Jerry Jackson of Roscoe, and Shirley and Vernon Patterson of Granby; 11 grandchildren, Pam and Sam Claussen, Scott Lutes, Brian Lutes, Melissa and Steve Bax, Rick and Nicole Renick, Jere and Mandy Jackson, Wendi and Nicholas McLerran, Sherri and Eric Anderson, Micheal Patterson, Sherrie and Paul Daniels, and Cindy Irwin; 18 great grandchildren and soon to be Baby McLerran making number 19; 6 great-great grandchildren and a number of very, very special nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by all.
